Deliciously addicting, these hazelnut chocolate energy balls make for the perfect sweet treat when you want something deeply satisfying yet still healthy and free of refined sugar. With hazelnut and cacao creating a Nutella like flavour, dates giving them natural sweetness, and oats adding a nice chew. Rolled in cacao powder for a little extra chocolate flavour in every bite. Even better served slightly cold, I often keep them in the freezer for an easy healthy dessert.

Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 6-7 Medjool dates (about 1 cup) - depending on how sweet you want them
  • 90 g raw hazelnuts (or lightly roasted for more flavour)
  • 100 g porridge oats (quick oats, 1¼ cups)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tbsp flax seeds, milled
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 9 tbsp water, as needed

For rolling (optional)

  • Cacao powder

Instructions

1. Toast the hazelnuts (optional, for deeper flavour)

  1. Oven method: Place hazelnuts on a baking tray and roast at 170°C (340°F) for 8–10 minutes, until lightly golden and fragrant.
  2. Pan method: Place the hazelnuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat. Toast for 5–7 minutes, stirring often.

2. Blend the base

  1. Add hazelnuts and oats to a food processor. Pulse until fine and crumbly.

3. Add the flavour

  1. Add the dates, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. Blend until the mixture starts to clump together. Add water slowly.

4. Shape and coat

  1. Roll into about 18 small balls. Coat in finely chopped hazelnuts or roll them in cacao powder.

5. Chill

  1. Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to set. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 2 months.
